Does one just turn the security level right down?

In my experience when I tried to access my Google account they detected I was overseas but that was ok since I still use my Clear Net ISP email ... and could access that. A work colleague couldn't access Gmail, secure email was sent to Hotmail but Hotmail blocked her too and she had to call home to ge a family member to open her email and click on the link. They might also send a secure code to your NZ SIM but if you are overseas there is a chance you might be on overseas SIM ... Microsoft has a app to approve certain actions but that would require you to have mobile data while overseas right?

Google one time passwords and Authenticator works fine for me. Plug in a one time password and then the authenticator from my phone and I am in.

Thanks for that. Are both required? The phone auth. app would require mobile data overseas right? What happens if one is just using internet cafes or the computers at the hotel / hostel.

PS - cheers. The app just generates a code so doesn't need data. Or one I guess could just get a code online write onto a piece of paper. But I gather some would get caught out, I got caught out before but luckily I used a primitive Clear Net email account for recovery.

Google Authenticator is just like a yubikey. Generates a one time password which is a random 6 digit number every minute.

Using the one time password means that logging in at an internet cafe if there was a key logger installed then they wouldn't get your password.

However with the cost of netbooks and tablets what they are I always recommend people use wifi and their own device. Then connect to a vpn and you are away.
