Hi All:

Have just submitted my Expression of Interest - a google search led me to this forum.

I'm 10 points short of 140 and seemingly I need a Job offer.  A face-to-face interview
would probably be a bit costly (both from a traveling perspective and the fact that I'm
currently contracting and income given up would be insane).

Have been in the Java field for about 10 years or so.

Anyone have some advise on whether it is possible to secure a job without a face-to-face
interview?  Google Circles, Skype or something of the sort?

Thanks in advance.

Kondwani

Kondwani, welcome to the forum.

Having moved here 16 years ago from SA it is difficult to secure a job remotely unless you have niche skills. I've got a friend (from SA) who has been in NZ for around a year and he had to be on the ground in order to secure a job. It really depends on the company though as my company has hired people from overseas.

I thought the rules now allowed you to get a provisional residence permit that allows you to come and secure a job.

Between online quiz's and Skype I think you'd be fine, if you have really good skills that are in strong demand. I can say demand dropped HUGELY mid last year and I'm not sure it's picked up again after Christmas yet.

Thanks for the Response Trevor, I din't know about the provisional residence permit.

Was wondering whether there are companies that recruit via video conferencing (skype, Google conferencing, etc).

I would be a little apprehensive to travel that far going on the basis of Google searches as to the availability of
jobs in the IT sector.

Thanks again.

Yeah I think travelling this far to look for a job and then returning home to finalise things isn't a great use of time or money.

I think you'd be better off committing to the move, coming over here, finding a job and settling in.

Don't get me wrong there are places that will interview/hire over the wire but it is much harder than being here in person.

You could always get a work permit and apply for residency once here. I work with an american lady who did just that.

Do look at the market - I had real trouble getting a contract in the last four months of last year. Permanent isn't a lot better. IT in Wellington seemed to go through a recession which it may still be in. Be careful.

I can't speak for other companies, but we have certainly picked up a few devs by Skype interviews. We have also helped with some of their immigration paperwork and requirements if we really wanted them. It does happen. Not sure if other companies are like ours though.

My company does the same but we aren't a true "IT Shop" (we do GIS which is on the skills shortage list).

Yup, my previous workplace did plenty of that! They even did "distributed interviews", i.e. any given interview can have multiple interviewers in two locations, and the interviewee in a third. I don't know how common this kind of practice is though.
