As you probably have heard Kim Dotcom' company Mega "The Privacy Company" which has offered cloud file storage with end to end encryption since 2013. 3 years after megaupload was shut down it has launched a new video calling service called MegaChat. It uses end to end encryption and is browser based, no need to install any additional programs. It is being called a Spy Proof alternative to Skype. The public beta is open at the new mega.nz domain.

Currently it is limited to video (and possibly audio) calls. IM and group conferencing is to follow

its old news  check out torrent freak about it.

by the way Kim dont own Mega. he founded it I know lots of misinformation always floating around about him
and what hes meant to have done :) e.g. king pirater and all when hollywood had access to the abuse tool
to remove links :)

Dotcom launched Mega in 2012, but no longer appears among the 17 shareholders listed in Companies Office records, although his estranged wife, Mona Dotcom and Wolf Dieter Ortmann are listed as owning 16.21 percent and 16.62 percent of the company respectively.

I know this and I know it's a couple of days old news I just posted it here because no one had yet and was interesting to see if there would be any discussion about it :)

There's nothing Skype Killer about it for me unless it federates with Lync.

Well I'll be keen to see what standards the product/service will use and therefore its ability to inter operate with other video applications

I am tech leading a VC initiative at my employer and we quickly discovered the sorry state of inter- operability [at least compared to telephony]

Can Skype call anything else - no - not without a g/w
Can Lync call standard based VC systems that use H.323 or SIP, or WebRTC - no - not without a g/w  [Lync intergration coming soon]
Can WebRTC be able to - no - not without a g/w
Can Facetime no...

You get the picture - bring on the day when video will be the same as telephony

The world is moving AWAY from federation, not towards it.

So is this like these new search engines that pop up now and then, promising to knock Google off of its perch?
