I've received a letter from eftpos NZ saying that my old workhorse K23 terminal needed an upgrade by October to a Verifone PCI 3.1x device.

Is this another hoax or do I really need to upgrade?

Do you guys have any recommendations of what is good value for money and would last. I only have about a 100 transactions a week and while integrated option would be nice, it would not justify the cost?

What POS system do you use? If it supports Payment Express then I can get you a rate of $47/mo for integrated EFTPOS on a 36mo contract, could look at giving you a rental holiday of a few months if you're still in contract with your current provider. This comes with quite a nice PINPad supporting the latest technologies (including tap-to-go).

Your machine is quite old and I would recommend upgrading it.

I'm guessing it's an old EMV5.x terminal - you haven't been able to connect these for quite some time now as a new connection. I thought it was towards the end of 2014 that these all had to be replaced, they're obviously extended this out.

Thanks, Michael. Ideally, I'm looking to purchase. As mentioned, I only have about a 100 transactions a week. My K23 still looks like new. It is more cost effective to buy for me.

I don't have a pos system setup, I key everything in :)

Not keen to go through the expense of upgrading if I don't have to though.

I tried to have a quick look on Google, but gave up. You can buy ex-lease terminals, but they all warn that they cannot be used on new connections (read: not EMV6 compliant).

Expect a new terminal to cost roughly $900-$1800, depending on features (I couldn't find any cheaper than ~$900). You are most likely incorrect that buying is more cost-effective - leasing one is most likely more cost-effective than buying one (considering in a lease arrangement, it's the provider's responsibility to provide repairs, upgrades if the networks mandate a new EMV version, and even paper depending on your contract).

Thanks for looking this up Kyanar. I also found it hard to find ex-lease options. Normally lease is close to $600 a year. If a terminal is $900, it will pay for itself within 18 month. Ex-lease could cost half of that. Cheaper to buy for me. It is just hard to get unbiased advice on what terminal is good to purchase, when everyone wants to sell you something.
