"NAS" in and of itself does not need pluralisation, as it does not define or infer quantity in any way. The pluralisation of "NAS Device" would, as coffeebaron points our, be "NAS Devices", for example.

think of it as

keeping up with the Joneses (pronounced Joan-sess), singular = Jones

and all the buses (or busses can be acceptable but originally buses)

but never use an apostrophe to indicate plural - that's used to indicate possession. but if i continue writing about apostrophes the geeks will burn me alive.

Many languages don't use a plural for words (with Maori being a classic example). If languages don't need them, why do acronyms?

Getting way OT but it annoys me that so many people are ignorant of plural usage particularly with Maori words that are common everyday English in NZ.

bcos in certain countries all you ever have is are acronyms.

Singapore for example - MRTs. ERPs. LRTs. NRICs. PRs. NCOs.

and here

DHBs. can't think of more at this stage

As mentioned above, I would always add "devices" on the end to pluralise it. "NAS devices" is a lot better than "NASes" or "NAS's".

I can think of three reasons why I agree that NAS is not pluralised:

  • "Storage" is the noun and "network-attached" is the compound adjective. It is not comparable with SAN because "storage" in that acronym is an adjective.
  • You don't say Network-Attached Storages so it won't be pluralised as NASs, NAS's, NASses, etc. If it were Network-Attached Store it could be pluralised.
  • "Network attached storage" is the technology which is qualified with "devices" "servers" "appliances" or "systems" because the storage is in a container of some sort. This is consistent on Wikipedia, Webopedia, and other dictionary, encyclopedia and other reference sites.

Indeed. I would say that "NAS", being a type of device rather than a device itself, can't be pluralised (just like how you can't pluralise "warm", "cold", "tall", etc).

Wouldn't it just be NAS because network attached storage doesn't actually sound like a single item. Its more a description rather than a noun.
