The office updates rolled out this morning replace all the ringing tones etc with new Skype for Business ones (Even if it still loads as Lync)

Possibly a dumb question, but:

I use Office 365. I never used Lync - after looking in to it a while ago, apparently the service in NZ wasn't great (Singapore servers?). I've got a personal skype account that uses the same Microsoft account to log on, and integrates reasonably nicely with Outlook (this was all for external communications, nothing internal)?

Should I be looking at moving to Skype for Business? Are there any advantages in an office 365 environment without any internal communications?

the Microsoft Account that you use for Skype is also letting you log into Office 365?

Yes...?

Well, at least exactly the same email address and password using the sign in using a microsoft account option.

I guess he created a Microsoft account with his O365 account.

Yeah, I think so. There was a merger of accounts too. If I remember right, I had a microsoft (non office 365 account) for skype (or maybe a skype name/skype only account?). I then set up an office 365 account, and was asked if I wanted to merge them. I log in to skype using the email address attached to office 365, but there is another (weird) user name in my profile too - live:firstname.lastname_1

I take it from context I shouldn't have (or shouldn't have been able to) do this?

Correct. Microsoft retired Windows Live Messenger and promoted Skype for instant messaging. Users have the option of merging the Skype and Windows Live accounts.

This should be only done really if you used Windows Live Messenger and wanted to keep communicating with these contacts, using Skype.

Microsoft has not done a great job of merging Windows Live Messenger and Skype contacts - for example I merged my accounts and I'd expect users to see one "freitasm" only but as it stands they still see two (my old Messenger and my Skype account). I also see two entries for each of my friends.

This is not related to Lync/Skype for Business but at the end it creates confusion - as you found out.

Also, to federate Lync on prem to Skype, the skype user must have linked their account as Lync requires an email address.

I personally would not link my personal Skype account with a business email address - change jobs, get stuck with that email address linked to your personal Skype account. No thanks... Skype is linked to personal Microsoft account, and that's fine.

Fair point, and I'd ordinarily agree with you. In previous jobs I've always insisted on being given a second phone/business mobile rather than "let us take over your contract/number". But in this case it's my business and the Skype account has more or less morphed into a business thing anyway. I think I have one friend I still talk to using that account. Everything else is work.

This is for new machines. I would like to avoid installing Lync and running updates if I can just install the Skype client instead.

It is not a Skype client. It is the same Lync 2013 with new name and skin plus the ability to interop with Skype.

Install Lync.
