Hi all,

Would anyone have recommendations on best NZ web hosting reseller. I'd like to set up for a few small to medium websites and leaning toward OpenHost. Not sure if there is a better/more cost effective option? Was considering offshore (Siteground - server in Singapore) but not sure on the speed. Any thoughts?

You should check out the companies support levels first. eg fire them off a message and see how long they take to answer and how good their knowledge is. Some hosts literally take days to reply. You also want to make sure they have been around for a long time, and also never buy hosting based on price alone as not hosting is the same quality. Also ask for uptime stats over the last few years, as some hosting can be very unreliable. Shared reseller hosting can be quite slow I have found, especially for wordpress and other CMS's. You have to setup caching and services like cloudflare can help. You may want to also look at buying multiple single hosting plans which means your cost is scalable based on the number of sites you host, and many of these single plans let you host multiple websites on it anyway.

I use a $5/m Digital Ocean VPS in Singapore to host about 15 sites. They are fairly low use, but I have no issues at all with speed.

What kind of site?

Use shared hosting anywhere in the world, use CloudFlare and make sure your headers are set appropriately so images are cached. That only helps the second time the images are accessed though. I do a lot of work for photographers with regards to website performance.

I have used openhost for years. Never had any problems at all.
Though they do seem to manually activate their hosting accounts- so you cant decide to sign up at 3am and expect it to be working at 3.20am.

I might be late here, but we used to use openhost for a heap of our clients but after a heap of poor customer service and unexplained downtime (4 days with no resolution timescale or notification of the problems, followed by zero explaination or apology), we moved...

check out vpscity.co.nz

smaller than openhost I think but great quick service and fairly decent prices.

I notice some replies suggesting off shore providers for reselling. Is it not important to use a business whose servers are hosted physically here in New Zealand, given possible latency issues, or does Cloudfare do a sufficient enough job these days for this not really to be an issue?

Cloudflare or Cloudfront is enough for many to most websites IMHO. NZ hosting will be better for some use cases.

Well I switched to OpenHost from A2Hosting in the States and it hasn't been an improvement of any note. Load times are still laggy and clients have asked why load times are slow. The dashboard is old school and had problems with a lack of email ports also. May be mistaken but support seemed to come from offshore as communication wasn't the clearest. Happy for now but for the jump in price, I'm wondering if Cloudflare or Siteground may have been better options.

Come on guys, if he has lots of large photos and his audience is mainly NZ he HAS to host here otherwise loading times will be massively increased.

Would you be willing to share your URL on here? We can probably advise you more effectively on what improvements can be made over and above moving your hosting locally.

There are lots of points to consider when looking from a speed prospective.

It could be relating to the host (they may be congested), your peering to the host (you might be going via the US to get to them if they don't have good peering) or inefficiency in your website (are your images compressed to a reasonable level so load times are fast?).

For a website that is heavy on images I would highly recommend staying in NZ. Traffic at a ISP level tends to get congested when going outside of NZ. On top of this, bandwidth being equal, latency is a large player in load times and it will be significantly slower when loading from a location outside of NZ as every request will take longer to process.

Considering you have just moved to Openhost I would try testing the website on another internet connection and checking your image sizes on the website. If you would like help on this feel free to flick me a pm/email, a simple URL can help many of us diagnose what is going on here.

Otherwise, if you have exhausted those options, when it comes to hosting there is only one player I can highly recommend in NZ (apart from my company of course!) and that is Sitehost. They are very knowledgeable and on to it when it comes to support.
