Set up a new Office 365 exchange online account for a customer's email hosting. Should be on the AU data centre.
Import their PST file into their new exchange online Outlook profile and left it to sync.
Sync seems to average 100kbps :( so this is going to take about 4 days for the 5-6GB email data to migrate into the cloud.

Why is this so slow? It has always been slow, but thought it would improve with a closer data centre.

I have tried this on 3 different ISP's. A RBI connection, a VDSL connection and an ADSL2 connection, all with easily more than 100kbps upstream bandwidth to many overseas destinations.

Is there some sort of rate shaping that happens at the Microsoft end?

MS only recently started moving customers provisioned in Singapore? to the Australia DC. Apparently MS gives the customers 6 weeks notice before the move, so there is a chance that they may not be hosted out of AU yet. That speed still sounds tragic though perhaps its more to do with the number of objects than the pure size of the mailbox?

This is a completely new account set-up, so I believe should be on AU server. Possibly the number of individual emails, rather than size of emails could be a factor, but surely better than 100kbps!

Microsoft restrict the upload to the data center as they do not want people doing migrations degrading the service of other users.
We found out the hard way, we had a client on ADSL who we moved to fiber thinking this would fix the problem but it did not.

You may find an improvement in speed after 5pm Singapore time ( that is what Microsoft told me when i complained about slow uploads )

FYI, each server has about 5000 clients on it.
2 users on the same domain may not necessarily be in the same server or data center.
Microsoft don't call a data center a data center until there are 100,000 or more of their servers in it.
Anything under 100,000 server is a point of presence.
Microsoft has two points of presence in Australia
Microsoft will not say how many data centers or points of presence they have in the world.
Once they install an OS on the server, it is not patched.
If they have an issue with a machine they simply take it out of the cluster and re-image the server with the latest stable version of the OS and return it to the cluster ( data is backed up in at least two other servers anyway )
Microsoft claim they can pull down and re-image every server in under 24 hours if they need to.

Log a support request and ask for the "throttling policy limit" to be temporarily increased for your migration.
Definitely helps

I moved a small business over recently, and i had a user with a 5gb PST that took about 3 days solid to upload
