Hi Everyone,
I am getting a hosted VM on a month by month basis for a development server for a Data Warehouse. I have been quoted SQL Development edition along with SQL Std Edt for 2 Cores.
Is this licencing correct or should I only need Dev Edt?
You are essentially paying for 2 instances. The development edition can only be used for development and for exhibiting solutions to potential clients. The SQL Standard licensing lets you run a production environment.
You will need both if you are running 2x databases (1 in production, 1 in developement). You will need only the development license if you will only be developing (ie the production environment is to be set up on a clients premises at their costs).
NOTE the development edition enables the use of the full enterprise features so you need to be careful that you dont enable a feature on development that isnt supported in the Standard edition.
You will need a SQL Standard or Enterprise license on any server that is hosting a production database. You will need only a Developer Edition license on a server where you are ONLY running test/development DBs (non-production). You do not need a Standard AND Developer license on a development/test-only server.
We have 2 separate VMs, one with SQL standard and one which I thought would only need Dev Edt.
Am I being mislead?
You pretty much answer your question here. You are paying for the SQL Dev edition on VM1 and the SQL Standard edition on VM2. If you only want to pay for 1 of them you need to shut down the other VM.
Oh i just thought of why you might be confused. If you are confused about the SQL Standard license for 2x Cores, the 2 cores is for the 2x vCPU in your VM with the Standard edition installed. MS Virtualisation rights for SQL can either be a per VM or per core. Basically if your application required heavy SQL processing and required 4x vCPU assigned to the VM you would essentially need to pay for SQL Standard edition for 4 cores.
