Hi Team

Just wondering if theres anything for RUM (Real User Measurement) to monitor the performance of local servers? Our personal services are local so using sites like Pingdom probably aren't best option although i could be wrong? Since Torbit is no longer an option i was wondering if anyone had any ideas?

You want User Measurement or just server monitoring?

I wouldn't go with StatusCake. It never worked in my tests and their support never replied to my two requests.

RUM uses the browsers' own measurement of activities so it doesn't matter if it's Pingdom or something else. If you want server monitoring, then it's another story.

Hey

Thanks for the info. Just hoping to monitor how our site(homepage etc) loads for local users. Speed etc. We've got a feeling its unacceptable but cant be sure. We use Openhost NZ

There's a difference between site monitoring (remote ping) and user measurement (browser stats). As I mentioned user measurement will give you information about the user experience collected from visitors around the world. The Pingdom RUM will let you see these numbers by location and the measurement is done on the browser, so where the service is based is irrelevant.

You can have some idea of local performance if you test with http://www.webpagetest.org/ - there's a Wellington node hosted at Trade Me. This will let you see what elements in your page take longer to load, block loading times, etc. But it's one test only while a good RUM tool will collect data from real live visitors around the clock.

Great stuff i think that was exactly what we need. :) For this particular project we don't need fancy pants metrics that start ups provide these days. Essentially we weren't sure if our shared hosting service(i know we cant expect miracles!) was any better than the Sydney based one we used in the past(without cloudflare)

Regarding speed (our no1 priority...yes yes we know many things affect speed ;) )...From what i can tell i think a bunch front-end scripts are REALLY slowing down load times. Not actually poor server performance. I think?

That first byte at 9.9 seconds is a worry. It should really be under 1.5s - 1s for best results.

Make sure resources are cacheable. Make sure scripts are run in async mode to avoid blocking. If this can't be done, make sure you can put these scripts just before the closing /body tag.

Just out of interest, why is torbit no longer an option? I've used them in the past and they seemed ok. Most of the RUM tools these days use async javascript and the nav timing api, so don't impact on your load times at all. It wouldn't make any difference whether it was hosted in NZ or overseas.

Problem with New Relic is that you have to add it to the code, instead of to pages - not usable in every situation. The ones using scripts only are much more flexible.

The main pages load...but those links above dont. Tested using vodafone and spark isp's . Which is kinda ironic

New Relic has some products (APM,Servers) you need to install an agent on your server/app. For the RUM (New Relic Browser) just need to add a javascript snippet, if I understand correctly.
