Hey there,

I use Onedrive to sync all my documents/photos/videos.

For some reason, the damn program won't automatically sync a file to the cloud when it is saved on my primary device (a laptop) , meaning when I got to access it on a different device the available file is an earlier version, often days old. If I force Onedrive to sync it will usually pick up the changed file and upload it, but it's a real hassle to do this each and every time. I've tried saving a file in a number of different locations and the same problem always happens.

This never happened with Dropbox, which I used prior - it too had a useful indicator on the file in Windows Explorer showing whether it was up-to-date, not synced, or in the process of being synced. Onedrive gives no such indication.

I really don't want to have to re-sync all my files, given it's something like 100GB, but that appears to be what Microsoft's Onedrive fix-it tool wants me to do.

Can anyone advise me what could be going wrong here, and what I may be able to do to fix it (other than re-sync everything!)?

If I can't fix Onedrive I think I'll go back to sticking key documents in Dropbox because at least this always worked for me perfectly in the past.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, should have been more precise.

Windows 8.1 on the laptop.

Standard Onedrive.

Right click on the White OneDrive cloud in your task tray, and select report a problem to upload your logs

I don't have that option unfortunately; the closest I think will be right-clicking and selecting help > troubleshooter.

I've run this previously, and have done so again just now.

I've allowed the troubleshooter to upload diagnostic data to Microsoft (sorry, can't recall the exact phase); it then immediately gave me the option to reset OneDrive, which this time I selected (last time I didn't). I'd forgotten that, according to the troubleshooter help, this will resync all files, which will take quite some time in my case, the very thing I was wanting to avoid!

So I'll leave the computer to do its sync thing over the next couple of days and report back as to whether this solves the problem.

Thanks for your help, Nathan...

A quick update: I completed the troubleshooter/resync tool, and it ended up not taking long at all (I had feared it would want to re-upload all files, but all it seemed to be doing was a file check?), and the troubleshooter claimed to have fixed any issues when it finished.

But... I still have exactly the same problem. I open a file in Excel, edit it, save it... and that's it. OneDrive this morning said it was last updated 10 hours ago, and this was immediately after saving a file located in the OneDrive folder; only by manually forcing a sync did it establish the file needed to be uploaded.

So I copied the file into my Dropbox folder. Within a couple of seconds the file's icon changed to 'updating' then a couple of seconds later changed to the green tick to show it's synced. Now that's how it's supposed to work...

Given I'm going to install Windows 10 in the next few days - and I aim to do a clean install - I'll try OneDrive again after that to see if it's sorted; if not, it'll be back to Dropbox for critical files that I want to access anytime anywhere.

Haven't been one of the lucky ones to be 'invited' to download Windows 10 yet, but I also haven't had the time in the weekend to download the file and install it manually... Will post back here once done, but must say it's lovely having the security of knowing Dropbox is working as it should (like being cheated on by your spouse, it's hard to get that trust back when a sync app doesn't sync!).

I used to recommend onedrive to clients and we had quite a few clients on it - we've moved them all over to google drive because of sync issues, suggest you look at that or move back to dropbox as MS don't seem to be able to nail this issue.

Also every single version of Windows work in a different way. Windows 7 needs the OneDrive client, Windows 8 is integrated, Windows 10 is integrated but won't sync folders by default.

It's very confusing...

Update:

I upgraded my laptop to 10 in the weekend, and can now report back that OneDrive appears to be working perfectly - ie, it's now syncing files immediately upon saving them, and doesn't require a manual push to do so.

Also a couple of other nice features with the move to 10:

* files now have an icon next to them to indicate whether they've been uploaded (or not) - just like I commented above was a good feature of Dropbox
* when saving a file within an Office app, I now even get a message at the bottom showing the file's being uploaded to OneDrive.

Certainly far better integration between Windows and OneDrive, and with this problem fixed I'm a happy customer once more.

OneDrive is different from OneDrive for Business, I'm assuming your comments above are about ODfB

The 2 synch engines will converge in Q4 this year
