Hi There!

I need to track down a HP H221 Controller for Monday AM in Wellington. Anyone got any ideas?

Heh I don't have anyone who looks after us like that in the EG, and our PPS guy is Aussie based. I already know one of our two distys don't have stock, the other is down for maintenance.

Turns out I was incorrectly advised by HP technical when I called to ask why the tape drive wasn't being detected. They told me the controller wasn't compatible, when in fact it should be. I would have been pissed if I had gone to the trouble of ordering one it hadn't worked. In fact the person from the server team tried to tell me I needed a controller I later found out has an external only interface for an INTERNAL drive!

Not often I see HP make a mistake like this, but what a pain. HP support have said they will "sort it" at no cost to us, so that is pretty excellent.

Interested to see what people interpret from this page:

http://h71016.www7.hp.com/dstore/MiddleFrame.asp?page=config&ProductLineId=450&FamilyId=1249&BaseId=40688&SkipRedirect=YES&oi=E9CED&BEID=19701&SBLID=

Is the H222 one of the the compatible controllers for this tape drive?

I'm no expert, but that page states that the H222 supports connecting up to 4 SAS drives OR a single internal tape drive.

Yep The H22 adapter is definitely listed as compatible.

It has one external and one internal SAS port. So it should be able to connect to either an internal or an external SAS tape drive (or both types at once).

/edit.. actually if the tape drive wasn't showing.. I would suspect it was likely to do with firmware on the SAS card. I would guess that the tape drive is a newer product than the SAS card. Perhaps there is updated firmware.

I have been told that with SAS the old problem with running a SCSI Tape Drive on the same controller as a SCSI RAID Array, is now done away as they are truly separate channels.

Anyone have any comments to make on this topic? Obviously it's ideal for customers to run a separate HBA but are their any caveats to the running both on the same controller?
