Little bit puzzled....

Got asked to transfer a .com domain to 1st Domains.

So yesterday I approached the company that had originally registered the domain (via Freeparking), and requested the EPP which they gave without a problem.
I then logged into my 1stDomains account and requested a transfer from Freeparking. It all appeared to go fine, 1st Domains site said should take about 24hrs to complete.

This morning, the original IT company emailed to say "it will transfer next week and forwarded an email from Freeparking saying it wont be done until this Sunday.

WTF ? Is this normal ? Why do I need to wait so long ?

International domains can take up to a few weeks, so whoever told you it would complete in 24 hours I don't think is correct. But not sure if they should be able to tell you the exact day. NZ domains transfer instantly, although some providers seem to take a day or so which I can't undertand.

Thats really strange. I've transferred domains many times, the most recent was from GoDaddy to CrazyDomains. They've always gone through within an hour of me making the request. Perhaps I've been lucky but it sounds more like your old registrar is just being lazy.

Edit: Also should clarify the transfers I've done were always on standard .com domains.

Rather frustrating then if a long wait is standard, luckily its not in use so wont be any downtime for the client.

Are you sure it has fully transferred though? It is usually the losing registrar that slows it down, as they have to do checking, and it does depend on who the losing registrar is. Usuallythe status changes to 'pending transfer' which it can stay in for several weeks. In the old days it took a lot longer. I have been transferring domains since 1999.

Nope 100% switched over. I moved hosting to another server on the same day since I had to reconfigure everything again, thought I might as well do it right. The domain was showing as transferred within an hour and I was able to configure it then. Obviously it took a bit for the DNS records to update but everything was finished and resolving correctly within a few hours.

I'm in the middle of a domain transfer for a client, from the just absolutely awful BluDomain to GoDaddy. We're in week two, waiting for them to confirm the transfer, with no sign when it might actually finish.

I think godaddys system is automated, so it is pretty quick. You just click a few confirmation emails.But some providers are damn slow.

.co.nz took about 5 minutes.

Thing is this is a .com being moved from one NZ company to another...  I dont see the point of the delay if its just them hoping you'll change your mind and stay....

I think it is the other way around, as it is usally the winning registrar that will put the blame on the losing registrar, if there is any delay. I think some of the registrars system requires manually authentication, so they have a staff member checking that it is valid. While some like godaddy it is all automated. Or perhaps godaddy are just super quick at authenticating transfers from their end. I guess they have to be careful incase a domain falls into the wrong hands.

I could tell you about register.com who I completely promise are worse, and I know this categorically without even hearing your story. 

Worst international company I have dealt with in the last 5 years! (and that is seriously saying something).

I need to transfer about 7 domains for a client, but I can't do it right now if there is any chance it's not immediate or close to it.

Overseas registrars seem t have pretty poor support I have found. I have had some shocking service from and Australian one too, their customer service over the ditch isn't great compared to NZ
