Hi all,

Can anyone please help me out with a little info.

I have a small isolated network with some windows7 embedded clients in it.

I want them to be able to do windows updates.

As there is no DNS in the little isolated network I was going to use hosts files to resolve windows update urls…. However I see windows update url hosts file entries are ignored by windows.

So, I assume the only option for me to get windows updates urls resolving is to either put an internal DNS in the network with dns forwarders, or go to external dns?

Does anyone know where I can find an article that supports this?

I'm  trying to explain this requirement to people who don’t want to hear it.

Thank you very much,

I'd say that's your easiest option.

You could also do something like setup an Internet facing WSUS server outside the isolated network, and configure the devices to use that, if Windows Update in WSUS mode lets you use the HOSTS file (never tried so YMMV)
