Google is not happy with Symantec and its feeble attempt to audit its certificate operation after issuing certificates to non-domain owners and non-registered domains.

The company issued an ultimatum, which ultimately could see lots of websites being declared "non-compliant": Google Online Security blog.

Commodo is #1 CA now. Not surprising.

Let's Encrypt can't come fast enough, do away with CAs like Symantec.

The whole point of a public CA is "trust".  Otherwise everyone would be using private CA's.  If Symantec can't meet the "trust" test, then it's root certificates should not be trusted.

Now imagine if Google took it a step further, and dropped Symantec protected sites from its search engine.  This would probably have a more powerful motivating effect than warnings displayed only in Chrome.
