i'm not sure if this would be the right forum, please move if incorrect.

i'm wanting to start a small business and just looking at cost/options for a website and business email.

any recommendations or companies to stay away from?

I'd recommend moodsdigital.co.nz - friend started new business from home, they based in Tauranga.

Keep it within NZ, you'll need to check with whoever your looking at if they host in NZ. I've seen soo many NZ based companies with US based Websites and its just slow and constantly a problem.

Agreed. Note that some "NZ hosting companies" host everything on servers in the USA. That's just as bad as going with someone overseas. If you're not sure where their servers are, ask their sales team :-)

I do a bit of small business IT work. I just put friends who run a restaurant / bar in Wellington onto SquareSpace for their website, with Google Apps for email. Costs about US$15/month.

Personally I use AWS and Wordpress, with FastMail for email.

Just note that hosting etc in NZ is pricier than the US hosting companies..... main advantage to NZ based is faster response (if NZ/AU is your core market) and local support.

I was (number of years ago) paying around $20NZD a month for NZ host and that only got me 20mb web space.

Kept chewing through it, so off to a US based host where for $30NZD I got a years hosting with unlimited space, data, databases etc.

I stopped using shared hosts, service on all of them is poor. It makes sense, for $5 a month or whatever what should you expect? Nothing, probably. So I moved to AWS.

Hosting out of NZ is a little fractionally faster, but if the overseas site uses a CDN (many do, including SquareSpace that I recommended) the speed should be fine. Browse the website of the provider, see how fast it is. If they don't include a CDN just add CloudFlare free.

Hosting on overseas websites shouldn't be that much of an issue, and you can use Cloudflare using CDNs. So you shouldn't really notice much difference in terms of loading speed. Most websites are hosted overseas outside NZ anyway.The bigger issue is hosts overloading their servers with account, which slows down websites. The less you pay, the more overloaded it is likely to be. Same as if you are buying anything cheaper, there is likely a reason for it being cheaper. Some hosts performance of wordpress sites is very poor. So some NZ hosts that do use NZ servers can be slower than ones that use US servers. Not to mention that from my past experience some NZ hosts are unreliable and provide poor support, and use support out of India anyway.

Athough you should assume they use NZ support. I used one NZ host,and their support was based out of India. So unless it is an advertised feature. Some NZ hosts will also only support during NZ business hours Mon - Fri. Also some can take days to reply.

My site is hosted on an EC2 instance with AWS, you can get a years service for free (obviously some exclusions there but its more than enough to run a web server and then some). Mines housed in the Sydney region so response is fairly quick. Even when I tried it on a US one it wasn't that bad.

Email hosted on Google right now but considering moving it to Amazon WorkMail which is the same price and everything would then be billed together.

There is also Microsoft Office365 for email, You can also pay a bit more and get the whole MS Office suite with word, powerpoint, outlook, excel etc

i was recommended this by a friend, since i would need the office suite i was thinking to use them for email and get the office product at the same time
