Hello Everyone,

I am looking for recommendations for a good web host/domain registrar - or at least as good as good can be :)

This is all new to me but I try to do my due diligence wherever I can. I spent 3 days reviewing different hosts and finally decided on a web host only to find their terms were more than what they advertise - surprise surprise!

So I thought I'd ask here for recommendations. I have no major requirements. I am just wanting to teach myself how to create my own website. I would like to support a local kiwi business however, as a poorly Uni student, it all depends on cost.

Any recommendations would be sincerely appreciated.

Not sure about hosting but for domain names I recommend Metaname.

Basically I googled 'best web hosting', 'web host reviews' etc. I tried to find independent reviews and then went through looking for those that were competitive in price and had lots of good reviews. I obviously didn't do my homework very well because I got hit up with a ridiculous fee as I was signing up so I quickly opted out of that one.

I suppose I could have gone with a next choice but I didn't have one. Hence why I am now here. Although I will continue to go through those reviews again to find another choice if I have to.

Sign up for AWS, you can get a year free. After that you can use a t2.nano instance for about US$2.50 per month. Note that this isn't super user friendly, wizard guided simple hosting, it's an enterprise grade hosting system. It's not difficult to use once you do some reading, but you have to do everything yourself. The easiest way to get started is to use a premade server, like bitnami Wordpress. If you want to do a bit of linux console you can use EasyEngine. You'll learn a lot, but it will take some time and effort.

However if you want easy, quick to get started, and support, don't go with AWS.

I met the guy who started it recently, he seemed pretty reasonable. They have some pretty good numbers to back them up.

For personal projects, I use Hoopla Hoosting, based in Christchurch. They do domain name sales & website hosting. Highly recommended - especially if you want to support a Kiwi company
