So the home server is in need of a refresh as the M2NPV-VM board is well past its prime. Over the years I've been through many iterations, and the addition of SSDs was the last incremental change.

Current build

  • Asus M2NPV-VM (left from my MythTV hacking days)
  • Athlon II X4 640
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 2 X SSD - Raid 1
  • 5 X 3TB HD - Raid 6
  • PCIe 4 Port Sata-3 card
  • GigE PCIe Network Card (onboard has died)
  • Arctic CPU Fan
  • Low voltage case fans

Requirements

  • New Motherboard

    • Minimum 4 x Sata-3 - 6 or more preferred
    • Onboard Video - Either via CPU/GPU on built in
    • Minimum 32GB Ram
    • GigE onboard
    • Micro ATX preferred
    • PCIe Slots to re-use SATA-3 card and allow for additional NIC
  • CPU

    • Open to AMD or Intel

      • Would probably hold back for AM4 if I was sticking with AMD
    • VT required (hardware virtualisation)
    • 4 Cores Preferred
    • Low Power Preferred
  • FAN

    • Quiet as possible as sits in home office these days

I'd ideally like to re-purpose the an existing case and PSU so this doesn't need to be a high end i7 based environment. I'm actually not using 100% of the current CPU and RAM is more of an issue at present.

I've got 2 850W efficient PSUs I can re-use and the current setup is very very quiet.

Research wise I've been leaning towards a B150 based board with an i5 CPU, but I'm open to suggestions.

I downgraded to an Intel NUC with 16gb and a 256gb m.2 SSD connected using wifi and win 10. Going to add a NAS next year. Apart from my development software and iTunes and Office 365 and Plex, I run a Linux VM and a Windows 7 VM on it.

Much of everything has been farmed out to devices such as an iPad and Apple tv
