On my facebook today was an add for Snozz.co.nz with a picture of a datacenter so I clicked to have a nosey.

On their webpage they said they do free webhosing.

We're thrilled to announce that we've opened up a new web hosting package, simply called; "Free" to get more of you Kiwipreneurs online!

I have my own domain but no website so the price is right :-)

Has anyone used their free webs service?

Were there any gotcha's or forced advertising like wix?

TIA

John

I would be wary of anyone that provides free hosting.

All hosting has a cost at some level (power / server / internet etc) and from previous experience (In the past I have provided free hosting) gets targeted by every kid and their latest script / phishing scam so I wouldn't consider anything you store on the same server as the free hosting as safe.

That said if all you're after is a basic website, Why not use the likes of wordpress and then setup cloudflare for a CNAME so it uses your own domain?

Thanks for your reply, I know that it wont be great webhosting and I know that it will be costing someone that is why I thought they might embed advertisements like Wix does.

I am not a fan of wordpress as they seemed to be hacked every few weeks via some of the plugins even though the security is up to date, someone seems to find a flaw very quickly.

I will have a look at cloudflare and see what they can offer, I dont know what they can offer,

Wordpress is fine as long as you keep it up to date. All CMSs are prone to being hacked. It is a bit like Windows, where the most users use Windows, so hackers tend to concentrate on the most popular  CMS's.  The thing is to only use popular and trusted plugins. The alternative is to use a Software as a service. But you never own the website, and they potentially could also be hacked or go out of business.

But it all really depends on what you want to use it for. The biggest cost with web hosting is quality support, and you do need it from time to time. You have to put a price on what your time is worth, vs something you aren't paying / or paying very little for.
