I've recently been consolidating and retiring some of my servers as I've gone a bit over board in the last few years (Can't pass up a good deal...). I'm now down to 3 dedicated servers (rented) plus a handful of VPSs. Considering my usage is now mainly personal (used to mirror some projects and host a few semi-useful websites - now its small personal sites, email, nextcloud, openvpn, backups and linux seeds) I've decided to retire another server.

I've had a Dedibox SC gen2 with Online.net since May 2015 that has been solely used for storing backups. It has long since been marked EOL and is not replaceable at the price point I'm paying (€5.99). I've transitioned the backups to another server so now it's just collecting dust. It features a mighty VIA Nano U2250 (1x 1600 MHz) with 2Gb of Ram and a 500Gb HDD ("ssd boosted") running Centos 6.9. Out of all the servers I've run this one has proven to be the most stable and reliable. It hasn't missed a beat since it was last rebooted:

21:00:53 up 576 days, 9:32, 1 user, load average: 0.01, 0.03, 0.00

It is with much sadness that I push the "Terminate" button.

Goodbye Pavlova, you've been a great wee server.

How's everyone else doing for system uptime? Knowing this community there has got to be a few peeps with 4 digit uptime figures.

R.I.P little server, sounds like you did an admirable job.

Ive got a Windows 08 R2 box here with 1092 days uptime which I think is pretty impressive. It doesnt really do much and should be cleaned up but I just wanna see how long it will go for :)

Sounds like a good enough reason to me to keep it going!

1092 days with no patching! Vulnerabilities galore!

I still have a Windows Home Server ver 1 ( based on Server 2003), running strong. One of the 4 HDD's died after 6 years service, plonked in a new 2TB drive, and it recovered gracefully. A random sampling of vids, audio, photos and docs seems to show nothing amiss. Most folders are duplicated across the drives, so if one drive dies, the data is still on other drives.

It did drop the backups of the 6 PC's, but that's not a biggie, as the backups are backed up to an external HDD. I didn't need to recover those, as the server just started the backups from fresh.

And I have a Windows XP ( patched for Point of Sale editions), that I only fire up for printing labels, and scanning - I have a perfectly usable labelwriter printer and Canon flatbed that are not supported on anything higher than Win XP.

Of course, under modern IT principles, you should be thinking of your servers as cattle, not as pets.

I've always wondered about this, it's almost like a philosophical IT question: an unpatched server with old vulnerabilities you can easily protect against with IPS (as they are well documented); or a heavily patched server with potentially new unknown vulnerabilities you cannot use IPS to protect. AFAIK there has never been Microsoft updates that have NOT introduced new flaws.

Yup it probably has quite a few of those. Fortunately it no longer has any network connectivity, I keep it around just to see what uptime it can reach before it dies. After that Ill probably just delete it
