I am in the process of bringing back to NZ some websites I own. I came across https://webhostingnz.com/ as one of the affordable hosts.

I dont know if they are technically amazing or if what they offer is good or bad for anyone else. My needs are very basic.

What I would like to mention is the brilliant attention to customer service, there promptness to reply to questions. The fact that there online chat service seems to be always attended even on Sunday afternoon.

They (Daniel and Fiona) the two I have spoken to have been excellent and patient. Just if you are looking I would consider them.

(They dont sponsor me or and have not asked for any applause from me.)

I can second this, they are really affordable for what I had, VPS's. Email replies usually within minutes no matter what time of day.

Been with them for over 3 months, no problems at all! Finally a reliable New Zealand based host an at affordable prices.

I wonder why they've chosen to register "webhostingnz.com" from a UK domain registrar, Fiona is listed as the main contact with a Gloucestershire address. Very curious.

Having said that, the IP addresses are in NZ. Good to know they are reliable!

You can look up any company on there companies office website to see where their addresses are.

That is true. However, it can be very challenging to match a website to an actual company name. Most companies have a DBA (doing business as) alias different than their registered name.

This is why companies like HostPapa can inundate the hosting market by giving the impression they are local when in fact they're not.

I guess in the end, what matters most for Kiwis looking for domestic web hosting is the IP address(es) they are assigned by their provider. That is a lot harder to spoof. Since webhostingnz.com is reselling IPs from HD.net.nz, that makes them local.

The terms and conditions of any company website, or the terms of the service, should show the legal trading name of any NZ registered company, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find.

I never thought to look there. Is that a legal requirement in NZ? The smaller shops might not abide to this unless it's legally required.

Would the lack of company info in the T&C possibly indicate and overseas vendor? Or lack of T&C altogether?

Firstly thank you gnfb and AidanS for your kind words.

This thread was pointed out to us to us so we would like to clear up the questions.

Webhostingnz.com is registered at Enom. In January 2017 Enom was sold to Tucows, a Canadian company. We use Enom for most of the domains we register that are not NZ domains.

The domain is registered to Fiona who is the owner of the company, the company is registered in UK. The previous owner was from NZ and had the company registered in NZ. When he passed his wishes were to pass the company to Fiona who is based in UK and it was easier for her to register the company there. As has been pointed out in this thread our servers are located in Auckland in the HD data centre and I personally am in New Zealand.

I always do a quick 'whois 49.50.249.70' IP lookup on a Linux machine, but you could use something like http://www.ip-tracker.org/locator/ip-lookup.php?ip=webhostingnz.com replace the webhostingnz.com with any domain you would like to check it's location.

Another good way of knowing if the servers are local or not is to ping them.

HD is good value, it doesn't make their service flaky, it's just cost-effective as it's not in Auckland CBD. Though it can be unpredictable in the evenings on occasion. Rock solid during the day though.

We have not noticed a problem with the connection to the servers in the evening and we do have checking systems in place. If any of our customers notice a problem with connecting to their accounts during the evening please do contact us so we can troubleshoot the problem and provide details to HD.
