So I just updated CrashPlan to the new 6.6.0 app and I cant see anywhere for setting the compression and dedup settings. Nor can i find a way in the Windows client to increase the memory allocation. I need to tweak these setting to get good performance out of CrashPlan.

Better look for an alternative https://www.theverge.com/2017/8/22/16184430/crashplan-home-shutting-down

Yeah, but I for the next year I get 75% off the standard Small Business price, so until then I'd rather stick with it.

This article tells you how to increase memory allocation...

https://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/6/Troubleshooting/Adjust_Code42_app_settings_for_memory_usage_with_large_backups

It looks like only the GUI has changed (and not for the better), so the old compression and deduplication settings may still work if specified in the configuration file. These are critical for keeping memory usage down.

I'm about ready to give up on online backup. An LTO-8 drive and fire proof safe are looking like increasingly good investments.

That is the article CrashPlan emailed me that I had to follow after the upgrade, but the article states:

 On Mac and Linux systems, you can increase the amount of memory available to the Code42 app. The necessary CLI commands have no effect on Windows systems.

Compression and deduplication can be set for each device via the Web interface.

Select the device under Active devices, click on the gear logo (top right), and select "Edit...".

The default for new devices can also be set via the Web interface.

No sign of any setting to increase the memory limit, but it's possible this is no longer required.

Thanks, I found the settings for compression and dedup in the end in the web portal.

I queried support about the memory settings, and they said to ctrl+shift+c in CrashPlan to open CLI and then use the "java mx XXXX, restart" command. I then asked them why their support article explicity stated this has no effect in Windows, and never got a reply.

I issued the command and it says it has been implemented, but I don't know if it is actually having any effect.

@SirHumphreyAppleby FYI

I finally got a response to my above query:

That was an error and has been updated now.

Oddly specific error to make, but they have indeed updated the support article.

@Paul1977. Handy to know, thanks.

My main backup is still in maintenance mode, and is now telling me it'll take another 2.2 days to complete. Memory usage is quite low however, a little over 200MB across the two CrashPlan processes, without the Java memory limit being set. Hopefully that means memory requirements are lower in this version, and I can reduce the current 8GB allocation to my VM.
