This is a fascinating link someone sent me. I found it compelling reading. It explains a lot of things that have been going on behind the scenes.

There's a real danger as these e-companies (or any companies) get so huge.

There is a tendency for them to eliminate all competition and even if that occurs by acquisition it still is worse off for consumers.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

In this instance it's far less to do with the ecosystem, and more about Googles search engine domination.

EDIT: And in this case the end user doesn't even know they are getting a raw deal.

Coincidentally I switched my deafult search provider to Duck Duck Go a few days ago. So far I haven't missed Google, but we'll see what happens over the coming weeks/months as I "settle in".

The only Google service I'm using on a regular basis is Hangouts. Replacing that might be tricky as it's dependent on friends changing at their end too. Plus I'm not even sure what else is out there!

Uh, DDG actually does its search by sending your query to Google. So it's protecting you from Google associating your queries with you, but it's not protecting you from the befarious practices described in the article.

If only their devices weren't so oversimplified as to be utterly frustrating to anyone that wants to use them in their own particular style, it'd actually be an option. Personally, I could never go back to Apple. The freedom that comes with Android is just better. Mind you, that has nothing to do with the tactics of Google in filtering out unwanted competition from their search results.

I too use DDG, but I suspect that if used with Chrome it probably doesn't remove that association anyway.

I didn't know that. It returns different results, but that makes sense considering that the results won't be "biased" towards me.
