My Menz Shed would like to sort out an email address, or several email addresses, and I don't have the first clue how to go about it  We'd be looking for something like @blenheim.menz.shed.org.nz with the first two dots being optional.  Then at least a secretary@  chairman@ and treasurer@  If anyone can steer me in the right direction, I'd very much appreciate it.

Thanks

[EDIT]  Just found this, so I think I might be on the right track :-)

You would talk to your web host, who should have email hosting with the web hosting. It may not be the best solution compared to something like googles hosted email, but it is probably cheaper(included with the web hosting)

Ultimately the owner of shed.org.nz is who decides to setup an email address on the account, and it seems that is available.  What your proposing is quite an unusual way of setting up an email address.  Technically speaking it is a fourth level subdomain, and isnt normal practice to setup emails on that.  It would make more sense to pick a whole domain name or contact the overseeing body of menzshed.org.nz and see about setting up a subdomain for your area, again as the owners that would be up to them.

If you were to pick your own name you could go something like blenheimmenzshed.org.nz.

The basic principle of domain emails is

A) Register a domain name

B) Setup DNS records that tell that domain what to do.  Specifically for email you setup MX records pointing at the system that will host your email (Goolge apps or Office 365 are the big players here)

C) Signup to an email provider like Google apps or Office 365 and setup the addresses.  This provider will tell you what to set the MX records to in step B

Cost which I imagine is a factor would be $25ish for domain a year, email accounts $5.00ish an account per month, DNS records free using cloudflare I understand.

The owner of MenzShed, will have to login to their control panel and set up emails, and they can be forwarded to your own gmails, this is doing it on the cheap. Try my trick here

Edit:

Most cpanel which this site should be on, being wordpress and all, should have free sub domain setup, and you can setup mailboxes for each areas of the country.

So secretary.blenheim@menzshed.org.nz or secretary.nelson@menzshed.org.nz  isnt going to work for you?

Would be much simpler to implement.

Thanks for all the pointers.  The national Menzshed is not the same as the Blenheim Menz Shed, but I think it might be worth asking them if they have helped any other sheds get a domain name.  There is a Facebook group so I'll ask there.  What sort of costs are involved?

I didn't see this answer when posting my last response, and it is a pretty good idea.  I'll chase that up and see if it is doable, so thanks for that.

If you use the subdomains option from the main site, it should cost you pretty much nothing. I'm not sure how Voyager has their pricing sorted, sorry.
