So this is a first for me... Had a call from a customer who we do internet, phone system etc for. They have had their domain and emails with a one-man band who has suddenly passed away apparently.

They need to reset their mail passwords as they can't access them but have no idea who their services are actually with.

So quick who is gives a german registrar... Name servers are ns1.ladybugit.net.nz and ns2.ladybugit.net.nz

So i hit www.ladybugit.net.nz and that gets redirected to...

http://www.ladybugit.net.nz/cgi-sys/suspendedpage.cgi

Not promising at all.

Also can't figure out who the mail server is run by by looking up domain and IP addresses.

Has anyone heard of this 'ladbybugit'? What can the customer do?

...we aren't set up with a domain registrar or anything so don't want to get too involved. But they are a nice customer so just want to see if we can help at all.

It really depends on who the registrar is that your customer's domain is registered with.  I suspect Ladybugit are just a reseller, so they should be able to help.  At the least, your customer should be able to obtain the UDAI or EPP codes for the domainname and transfer it somewhere, setup a new mail service and continue operating.

If you do a mxlookup you'll see the IP of the mail server which may or not be of any use.

Assuming the customer has a .nz domain name, I would follow up with the DNC (https://dnc.org.nz/) - they should be able to provide some form of information in terms of how to from here.  (How hard that process is depends on whether the domain names are held "on behalf" or registered under the clients name)

Following the registrar information on the .net.nz domain seems to bring me to the .co.nz variant: http://www.ladybugit.co.nz/ Which seems to be run by Lorraine - hopefully different from the person who has passed, and you may get some help there?

Failing that, checking the setup of local mail clients may assist in working out the POP/Imap/other server, which may aid in tracking down how the email is being handled.

EDIT: Going to the DNC would be a step to regain control of the domain name away from the current provider - given that the provider has passed - given that you don't want to go down the track of domain registrations, it might be best to step straight to looking at the local mail client setups to determine where/who to talk to next for email password recovery.

Ahhh good stuff... didn't think about working back from that.

Looks like they were an Umbrellar reseller.... oh joy.

At least that will give them a place to start.
