What network diagnostic tools do you use on a Windows laptop?

 

I normally use Linux to sort client's stuff out from my home office but am starting to do more onsite now. So I am looking for a good tool or 2 to diagnose those curly issues when using my Windows laptop. As in the sort of stuff which isn't readily diagnosable at the client's PC.

wireshark is the only network diagnostic tool I use

 

or tcpdump, then using wireshark to view the pcap file

Great tools but possibly too indepth for home and small business networks. Most of them won't even have a switch which supports packet capturing.

well you would normally do the packet capture on the client, server or router if it supports it

Some of these "networks" are literally a few computers plugged into a ISP supplied router.

Yes, but what exactly..

 

 

 

Network problems, bsods, generic app issues, malware, virus, printing problems, etc???

 

 

 

When you say network diagnostic tool, the only tool worth using is Wireshark.

Stick with what you know - if you're a Linux chap, consider trying out WSL - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install-win10

 

That'll let you play with most of your familiar toys in Windows.

Often: Ping, Tracert, nslookup, nmap

 

Occasionally: arp, netstat, nbtstat, telnet, wireshark,

Daily tools, ping, nslookup, iperf, traceroute, nmap, Wireshark. Sensors from router pcap capture, switch arp, mac and lldp reading, that's most of it.
