I just sent an email to someone. A dialog box popped up saying that I'd included the words "I've attached" but that I hadn't included an attachment file. Very clever of it.

Microsoft have had this since Outlook 2013 if I recall correctly. Saved my butt a few times too!

It's done that for a while.

Mine also adds reminders to my calendar for bills that are due, flights, accommodation, etc, etc, etc (This is actually quite annoying as I have a short gmail address that a number of people around the world seem to think is theirs so I get various reminders to pay my internet bill in the UK, power bill in malaysia, that I'm checking into some random accommodation in poland, etc lol)

EDIT: I'm actually not sure if this is just a gmail thing or something I opted into on android or with google assistant. The lines are blurred....

If my memory serves me correctly, Thunderbird has had that "attachment" warning feature for ages - I'd imagine well over a decade, so it's good to see it making its becoming more common. (Edit - it looks like 10 years ago the feature was provided by an add-in; not sure when it became standard. See https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/attachment-reminder/)

Experienced a good example of how useful some of these Google 'smarts' are when my wife received a Google Assistant message on her phone saying her flight the next morning would be delayed by 1.5 hours. She got no warning from Air New Zealand, and hadn't thought to have checked their site, so it was just as well!

My Dad forwarded me his flight details confirmation email, Google reminded me of the flight - can't remember how, it wasn't Google assistant as I turned that off.

Does it breech the privacy act if we don't know?

Pffft. Google is so behind the times. I just have to think about something I want to buy... and BOOM, my Facebook feed is full of adverts for that very item!

If you like that, you might also be interested in 'Use Smart Compose'. You can even 'Send & receive money with Gmail'!. In fact, you might want to try the 'new Gmail update'.

Gmail labs has had this feature since 2008, but a quick search indicates it was only rolled out in 2016.
