The subject says it all really! I have a NZ-based business client that wants an Australian domain name. However, they don't have an ABN number, which is required to register them. Years ago, I found a service that registered on behalf but I can't find it now. Does anyone have any advice or can point me in the right direction?

Get the client to get an ABN. Don't rely on a 3rd party to handle it, could end up in all sorts of strife if things turned nasty between the client and the ABN supplier.

Do it right, do it once.

Its the same with a domain name, make sure its the owners name on all the records, not the web designer etc.

I agree but are they able to get an ABN without actually having an Australian-registered business entity?

I believe when you register an Australian trade mark, an ABN number is also generated. This can be an easier way to get one.

It does not solve squatting issues and makes it a PITA for personal use domains.

Yes you do need a presence in AU - the way I did it for a client years ago, was ask if they had a company representative or family member in AU who could sign up as a company and obtain the ABN - worked fine for them :)

The OP has a business case and for personal use, Australia does offer .id.au

I registered an ABN for my company under "Other Incorporated Entity" to get an Australian bank account to receive payments

Being a NZ registered company made it super straightforward, but it was 2014 so may have changed since then? It was mostly about providing the NZ company registration details. Took very little effort.

If that was the case in 2014 then in theory it should be even easier now.  I'm pretty sure the current Government signed an agreement with the Australian Government a couple of months ago to make doing business on either side of the Tasman even easier.  That agreement may not have kicked in yet.

Found it.  It was about electronic invoicing leveraging both ABN and NZBNs.  Maybe this might indirectly ease the path to acquiring an ABN?
