I am installing a proper hardwired ESD system at my workbench-

1. Should I earth this all to the mains earth?

2. Is there a limit on series resistance? (wrist strap - 1meg + grounding hub 1meg = 2meg Ohm)

At work we have ESD mats on the tables or workbench.  The mat is connected  via a 10mm stud ( button) 1M Ohm to the mains earth.

Something like this https://nz.rs-online.com/web/p/esd-grounding-accessories/1229153/

The 1M Ohm is built into the device that also houses 2 x  4mm banana sockets that allows a wrist strap to be connected

In a manufacturing environment workers wear foot straps and work areas have ESD flooring to prevent ESD damage to components.

This might be overkill for your needs but an ESD mat is recommended for your work surface.
