Anyone running WebMarshal as a proxy ?

Just looking for real world thoughts on it...good, bad ? Why ?

I have a customer running an older version of WebMarshal and it runs really well - very configurable. The only thing it doesn't do is cacheing so we have it sitting behind ISA in proxy mode which does the cacheing.

Now.... anyone know how to get hold of Marshalsoftware in NZ ???
They dont answer any of their phones and dont return calls.

Not a good look

We're looking at purchasing quite a few licenses too... their loss if I have to go elsewhere.

We use it at our workplace and find it quite effective.

Have had a few issues at times where the reporting function wasn't working...still waiting for this to be resolved (by our third party IT provider).

When it's all go, it works well. It does seem to lump all traffic into one though, so if you are looking for total bandwidth used you need to filter out Intranet and national sites (if free national traffic). You can customise reports however, so that should be able to be overcome.

It's also very useful for identifying 'time waster' sites, especially when Managers realise how much time some of their staff can spend online.

Most of the ISPs that peer with WIX offer free national traffic, e.g. Citylink.

Webmarshal also can have squid as a backend proxy (ie no horrible ISA server), so considering the light load that Webmarshal puts on the NIC and processor, you can do quite a nice single box solution using SME Server (www.contribs.org) {which has a preconfig'd squid} + VMWare server for Linux + Webmarshal running in a Windows server VM. You don't really need to back it up aside from occasionally dropping the VM and copying out the VM folder, and whenever you make rule changes getting WM to dump its config to somewhere else. SME Server is a 15min install, VMWare server is another 15min. Or you could run ESX3i and virtualise both linux/squid & the WM VM box. That way the only licensing you need to buy is the WM + Win server license to run it on.
