Out of the blue, I got "java.lang.NullPointerException" error on my Firefox, then Firefox stop responding or crashed. Whenever I go to a site with java applet or at Java version verify page

I have uninstalled JRE and reinstall. But nothing seems to change.

It works fine if I use IE/Opera/Safari for Window.

I try google for solution but can't find anything useful. Can someone help me please??

A NullPointerException is pretty common in Java software, so we'll need some more information to be able to help you.
First of all, go to the Java icon in Control Panel, go to the Update tab and click Update Now. This will ensure you have the very latest version. Once you've done this, try loading the version page in Firefox again.

If you're still getting the issue, find the Java icon in the notification area on the Windows taskbar (by the clock), right click it and choose Open Console. Copy and paste the results into this thread so that we can see the full stack trace.

It looks like Java is having trouble when trying to automatically determine which proxy server it should use (if any).

Try going into the Java option in Control Panel again, but this time click the Network Settings button and manually specify your proxy settings. If you're not behind a proxy server, just choose Direct Connection.

It got me through to the next page then it freezed the whole firefox and crashed. No error message popup this time. I look in the console, here's the message:-

The error message seems to be the same as last time, so I don't think we have actually made any progress.

skykissme: Do you think if I upgrade to Firefox 3 the problem will go away?

Unlikely. The issue is related to the Java Virtual Machine reading your proxy settings from the registry and failing when it doesn't find any.

Have you tried the Java version page in any of the other web browsers since making the Java proxy change?

I tried with Internet Explorer 7, Opera 9.51, and Safari for Window 3.0.3 on this very same machine, they are all works fine. I got the respond back from Java Version verify page. But not Firefox. And it's just out of the blue it stop working.
