Hi there

I am trying to find cheap linux VPS *based in NZ, or with NZ IP address*

The NZ sites I've looked at are ridiculously expensive compared to their US counterparts.

All I want it for is to set up a simple Shadowsocks VPN server so that I can look like I am coming from NZ no matter where I am in the world.

At DigitalOcean I can do this for $5 USD a month.  But I can't find anything close to that that allows me to come from an NZ-based server.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Brett

Yeah I also find this a little frustrating. I believe TunnelBear had an NZ VPN as part of their service but those sites keep chopping and changing.

There was a "low end spirit" VPS in NZ for a while but it closed down.
When you're paying peanuts for a service unless they are doing it out of the goodness in their hearts it's unlikely to survive.

i-83.net still has its Auckland based NAT VPS's - https://i-83.net/ - Other option if you wanted a full VPS would be Zappiehost https://zappiehost.com/new-zealand-linux-ssd-vps-servers

Does it have to be NZ, is Syd not close enough, DigitalOcean and Vultr have service there for that money and based on my vutlr instances the service is good, and only 30-35mS away

Cyril

Edit: doh, just realised you wanted to geo lock to nz.

The commercial VPN Astrill has an NZ server, or did when I last used it. I can't link to it because of where I am, but Google them and look at their server list. I find them a good VPN provider. You can't run torrents through their NZ server, but you can through some of their Australia servers, I guess because bandwidth in NZ is expensive.

I have a VPN from my phone back to my home router. It was easy to set up to my Fritzbox, and I could get a laptop working using it if I needed to. The older Fritz 7390 gets about 2Mbps through from my work WiFi, which otherwise is fairly fast, which sounds slow but it's plenty for almost anything I need to do from my phone.

OpenVPN running on my R7000 is good for 40-50Mbps. So... find a mate with gigabit UFB and a decent router, and buy them a few boxes of beer?

Thanks everyone. I will check out those options.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

@michaelmurfy recommended it while back and it is really quite good and insanely easy to set up. Will be even better now with R-Pi 4.
