A word of warning to all.

Following a screw up by GoDaddy with a domain renewal I find myself with a dead domain! I won't bore you with the detail.

The problem is that they won't release the domain UDAI without us paying a USD $79.00 redemption fee. Its plain and simple extorsion!

This is despite breaking NZ DNC rules who state a valid UDAI must be provided free of charge.

Two days of jumping through hoops and I still do not have a valid UDAI.

NZ DNC are doing what they can to help but even they have a process to go through.

In the interim I am pulling all GoDaddy business and shouting it from the rooftops that we all need to avoid dealing with these muppets at all costs.

The subject says DNS problem but you mention domain renewal. Which is what then?

Is this a .nz domain extension? Can't you ask the DNC or NZ registry to generate you the UDAI directly?

If the domain is expired then most overseas registrants won't transfer the domain until it's current.

Can you confirm its a *.nz domain ?

If its a .com, youre probably falling under the system put in place a few years ago that effectively holds the domain to a host/registrar for x amount of days after a change has been made on it - this is to prevent domain theft/hijacking etc.

You also can't move an expired domain to stop people moving the domain and refusing to pay the bill.

UDAI is a .nz concept. It doesn't exist in the .com world.

ICANN has rules about .com as well, when a domain expires it's meant to be put into a redeemable-by-owner state for at least a month? before it can be put into the for-sale-by-auction pool which seems to be the usual result. I had to threaten legal action and involve ICANN when the registrar for a commercial .com put a domain that expired (due to registrant email address being a personal address for long-gone staff member) and wasn't left in limbo for the required amount of time.

Note when in that limbo period, it can't be bought by anyone else but it is disabled in the DNS. Much like the .nz pending-release state.

OP - I'm hearing you! When I wanted to transfer a few domains away from GoDaddy (not 'dead' ones, btw) I couldn't get a response from them at all over a period of about a month. I elected to not beat around the bush and lodged a complaint with ICANN then emailed GoDaddy and let them know I'd done that. I had an email back from them the very next day whining about me not giving them enough time. Got my UDAI keys fairly promptly as well and am now quite happy with my domains over at Metaname.

Unless changes have been made, this is actually incorrect. You can still move a domain while it is not active (pending release). You just have to make sure that the contact details are exactly the same in new Registrars system. So as long as you have the current UDAI, you can still move it. You would then be able to renew it at the new Registrar. As the domain was then not renewed at the old Registrar, they can't actually enforce you to pay for the bill, as they did not provide you the service they are billing you for. You would only be required to pay if you are under contract or any other legal obligations that require you to pay.

GoDaddy has a horrible user interface. I moved away from them years ago because of the complex busy UI and constant upsells.
