Not sure if anyone cares.. but the Domainz brand is being retired by the end of the year. I just got an email relating to an account in their system that I have not used for 12+years.

body of email ....

Dear [didnt even get my name right],

For over 20-years years Domainz has been one of New Zealand’s favourite domain registration companies, helping local businesses succeed online.

As part of Arq Group, a public company that specialises in domain names, web hosting and digital marketing across New Zealand & Australia, we know that the digital world is a fast moving one. To continue to offer you the best products and service possible, we will be joining another Arq Group brand, Netregistry.

What does this mean to you?

The short answer is, not much. Your products and prices won’t change, neither will the user name or password on your account, even our phone number will remain the same. The only real change is that any communication you receive from us will come with a Netregistry logo on it.

What do you need to do?

At this stage, nothing. In 2-weeks, we will contact you to let you know the exact date that you will become a Netregistry customer, so please do keep an eye on your inbox.

Domain/s to be moved:
[****3 domains I dont have with domainz anymore*** ]

In the meantime, we’re still here to help, so if you want to access your account click here or if you have any questions, you can call us on 0800 DOMAINZ or click here to read or FAQs.

Yours Sincerely,

Claire Williams
Head of Customer Care

So are they removing the branding from their  website too? I thought it got taken over by Melbourne IT. I am only interested in terms of the history, as at one time it was the only brand you could buy domains through until 2001ish when it was all opened up.

I worked for Domainz from 2004 to 2010. For professional reasons I don't want to say too much, except that I'm sad but not surprised to hear this move.

I had a lot of good memories during my time there, but it's my understanding that they closed their NZ office a few years after I left.

Melbourne IT changed its name in 2018 as per this release -> https://www.crn.com.au/news/melbourne-it-is-changing-its-name-to-arq-group-as-part-of-restructure-489670

I think Netregistry was another of Melbourne IT's brands ?? could be very wrong on that one. But to me it seems their just looking to remove the domainz brand from the NZ market. Less things to maintain in a market place with small margins etc

Small margins? Unless they changed their pricing in the last few years, Domainz used to be one of the most expensive registrars for .nz's!

Hmm yeah ... just checked, rather impressive..Twice the average and almost three times the lowest for .co.nz domanis.

ok I sit corrected :-D .... ill go with ever dropping sales volume due to their pricing model!

Melbourne IT is/was not great and expensive. There are better alternatives in NZ.
