So for about a year now I have been given warnings from google that my account is nearly maxing out the 17GB allocated.

So I can see that 11.5GB was gmail and 5GB was google drive.

I have deleted the oldest 25,000 of my 40,000 emails and I now am using 10GB on gmail.

I would have thought it would be down to 6GB.

Trash is empty.

Anyone has the same issue?

Look for large attachments, instructions. Make sure you empty the trash. Gmail is really, really poor at actually deleting old emails so you might find many are still hanging around.

Google Drive, empty the trash.

I have had a  similar problem with email services and it turned out the quota files were corrupted, so didn't detect that files had been deleted. But I doubt thee is much in the way of support from gmail that can help if this is the case.

Batman:

Also wait 24hrs for the space used value to be accurate.

PS: Forgot to add, most instructions focus on emails with large attachments. Thing is, inline photos are not attachments, but still large emails. This is especially true in more recent years where phones take 2-6MB photo's & don't downsize them for email. This means it won't be your older (mainly text only) emails, but it will be the more recent (<5yrs) emails that are the cause. If you find a query to find large emails, regardless of attachments, please post here.

I had a similar issue and it turned out I had a swag of photos saved, but they didnt show in Google Drive.

Had to specifically go to Google Photos and get rid of them.

kiwifidget: ... Had to specifically go to Google Photos and get rid of them.

This could be photos stored in "original quality" instead the downsized "high quality".
