Metaname wants to charge me $60.00 a year :-(

Discount Domains will charge me $39.95, which is reasonable. Should I go with them? Or are there better options?

I don't really want to be without 2FA or reasonably competent support. So, price isn't the only factor.

Going overseas is acceptable, though my first preference is a local registrar.

TIA :-)

I'm with Crazy Domains @ $36.80/yr for my .kiwi domain, no complaints so far

Stay well away from Domains4Less, non-existent support and pricing isn't great either

I've not heard of them before. But their pricing is reasonable, and I like that they're local. What's their support like when you have to interact with it?

.kiwi.nz is also a good option as that's classed as a normal NZ domain, if you don't need the .kiwi

kiwi.nz seems a bit superfluous to me. It's not awful, and it is cheaper. But shorter and simpler is nearly always better, when it comes to domains, IMO.
