What's average? What's the longest you ever had to wait? Ever simply _not_ get it at all and have to complain?

I swear some of them must intentionally slow this process down in the hope days will go by and the customer will forget they wanted to transfer their domain :-D

We have been involved in dozens of domain transfers, and have always had them generated immediately while on the phone (if we have had to call) or very quickly via ticket.  Having said that, we never use budget or small providers.

As long as it takes to answer a call or to answer an email. Its a click on the providers Control Panel and its there. Validate it at DNC and send it on, thats all thats involved

5-10mins probably.

But yes, some registrars are slack and try to delay in the hopes you'll change your mind because its "too hard"..... :D

<1 second using Metaname. It's a simple button click which generates the UDAI and displays it to screen. If it's more complex than that, switch to a different company. The companies I used prior to Metaname at worst would email it to you after a few mins.

Metaname are instant if you want a UDAI.

Not a stab at the OP but this is something that annoys me. If a service provider is too cheap, then something is missing - or their practices will at some point be against your interests.

I'm on day three of waiting with Discount Domains, right now. I just checked the activity log, and it states the "domain key" was emailed to me yesterday at 2:15pm. It never appeared, and is not in spam. I've emailed their support about it.

I wish I was more surprised by this. I once waited a whole week with a particularly poor cheap-o registrar. I thought Discount Domains would be a tad better.

I'm pleased to hear Metaname is responsive in this regard, as I've just become a customer of theirs for TLDs that are reasonably priced by them. Pity they've some steep pricing for some TLDs, like '.kiwi'. But if I continue to have good experiences with Metaname, I'll continue moving and registering .nz and the like to them.

Heh. I have to admit I'm sometimes tempted to find out what cheap can get me in terms of value (especially when I know I'll have no need of returns/refunds, or it's mostly a set and forget kinda service). And yes - that has sometimes resulted in very poor support when I've needed it :-) OTOH, it has also saved me quite a lot of money.

Generally, though, nowadays I _am_ willing to pay a modest premium to get decent support and go local, if possible. In my heart of hearts, I'm a cheap [censored]. But lessons have been learnt over the years *grins* Plus I've become increasingly aware that if I don't make _some_ effort to support local business, I'm only hurting myself in the long term.

On a related note for Metaname, their support response was very quick when I contacted them. I was looking for a TLD that they didn't list & next day I got a reply that it was added.

I recently transferred a domain from Discount Domains to Meta and the UDAI was well under 5 mins of requesting the UDAI

Are you able to dig deeper in to you mail and see if it has been blocked by your provider?

Well, something has gone amiss with Discount Domains. They'll hopefully act on my email come Monday office hours.

The email account I use for these things is with a certain very large very popular free email provider, so I'd be surprised if it was their fault.

If its microsoft email, it almost certainly will be their fault.

It isn't MS's free or paid email, but why do you say that?

Because I have a hell of a lot of things using my old hotmail address and its about a 50/50 chance of me getting password reset emails, or other automated confirmation emails thru to it vs them disappearing not even hitting the spam folder. Compared to my gmail where they all come thru straight away. It seems that MS are over aggressive on their filtering to the point that the service is borderline useless.
