GZ Crew,

Dumb question as I have never been presented with this issue before.....

Is it possible to transfer an expired/pending release domain between providers ??

Long story short customer does not want to pay current company as they are charging $65+GST per year for a .nz
I am told they requested the UDIA before the domain expired (who knows).

Cheers

Lee

If you can 'prove' the UDAI was requested before expiry, then push the provider for it.  Other than that, just pay the renewal and then make the move.  You may be aware most providers will do a free transfer and honour the original renewal date.

Depending on the coffee issue here, will cost them more for me to get into and solve than the renewal cost ....

Was just interested if the SRS supported the ability to transfer a domain in the "pending release" state in general.

Will give the DNC a ring always good to learn something new.

NZ Domains can be transferred once expired as long as you have the UDAI

17.4 During the pending release period, the Registrar may fully re-instate the domain name for the Registrant, so that it becomes active again. The domain name may also be transferred to a new Registrar and be reinstated by that new Registrar.

Fantastic... Had rung the DNC but they are all hiding so sent a request via their website.

I guess the missing piece of the puzzle is to work out if a UDIA can be regenerated/sent for a pending domain.

Customer issue sorted anyway. Domain renewed with their existing provider at crazy price. Udia provided and domain transferred to lower cost company for next renewal.

Pretty sure a UDAI can be generated on an expired domain.

From a technical perspective, UDAIs can definitely be generated when the domain is PendingRelease.  From a policy perspective it seems clear there are no exceptions to the rules concerning UDAIs when domain names are PendingRelease:

(See Section 14 of the Operations and Procedures Policy at the DNC site):

14.1 Registrars and the Registry may generate a new UDAI at any time.

14.3 Registrars must pass on the UDAI to Registrants whenever a new UDAI is generated. ... As stated in clause 7.10, the UDAI must also be provided to Registrants on request. If the Registrar fails to provide a UDAI to the Registrant, DNCL may do so.

14.4 For security reasons, UDAIs will expire at the end of a set period.

So I guess its up to the registrar to support this function in their respective system(s) ie they must still allow a customer to login and generate a UDIA on an expired domain that is still within the registrar's control ??

Would not allowing this be against the rules of the office of the DNC ???

Section 7.10 states "...The Registrar must provide the UDAI to the Registrant on request."

It used to specify that the request must be satisfied within a reasonable time frame but has since been re-written.

The policy does not dictate the mechanism by which a registrar must supply the UDAI, so if a support ticket is required then that is not a breach of .nz policy.  Not supplying a UDAI upon request would be a breach and should be taken up with the DNC at https://dnc.org.nz/.
