Hi all,

Looking for some software (prefrably open source/cheap) that will allow us to have a "local" online storage system with basic username/password security.

Something like "GDrive" or DropBox but on a smaller scale and "local".

Anyone know of anything ?

Do you mean local as in hosted in a NZ data center or local as in setup on a server at your work/home?

Setup at work - hosting isnt an option unfortunately else Id just suggest Dropbox etc :)

So what are you trying to do? Run a server in the office that provides remote users/machines access to files as pseudo file system?

Something like this...

A simple document management system (DMS) that you can install on a file server at work, preferably open source or free or pretty cheap.

The file server will be running a webserver (either IIS or Apache) and a database (MySQL or SQL Express).

You want a nice web 2.0ish UI that easy to use.

You want to be able to load your docs into system in a not to tedious way, setup some users, setup permissions etc.

Your users (Mac, Linux, Windows) can then login to the local website using their browser of choice (IE, Safari, Firefox, Google Chrome) and do stuff (search, browse, download, upload and "admin" files) depending on their permissions.

You don't want to use sharepoint because you don't have a windows domain environment and have a few Mac's/Linux machines and non MS browsers (Is this still a valid reason to not use Sharepoint thesedays??) or maybe you don't have any spare 2003 or 2008 servers and want to use Linux or something.

I'm looking for something similar too. I think I might have to built it when I get some free time as I haven't found anything that didn't seem crap.

http://datalock.co.nz/ might be what you're after, hosted locally... if Maxnet is your ISP then your traffic to and from their service is free too.
