Help please.

Suggestions for hosting a single .co.nz domain and 4 Pop mailboxes.

I've been using KWH (now MyHost) and they are
(a) dearer than I'd like (as a pensioner)
(b) archaic on their size limits for email

My Geekzone search didn't turn up anything on this topic since 2022.

Fastmail.com is an option. DNS management is in the same mail interface.

What are the requirements for the domain? Are there any specific software, database, platforms that must be available? If you are hosting a static website, couldn't you use Cloudflare Pages for free?

There are a few email hosting options - Google Workspace, Proton Mail, Office 365 Exchange. These offer more than just POP. If you are using POP only, assume most of your email is on the server (unless you download and make backups). So you will need to think about migration. Also, you will need to think about email configuration (new server means SPF/DKIM/DMARC need to be created or updated, for safety and deliverability).

In any cases, these are more complex and cost about the same (one plan or another might save your a couple of dollars, or cost you more).

Thanks guys.

Don't really need the website part of domain hosting anymore.
I have some old web pages that I occasionally refer people to - but it's only nostalgia.
Fun to keep around, but it could die without too many tears.

I just don't feel inclined to track down all the old friends & contacts (who use my paul/pdh/junk/etc@xxxx.co.nz) and switch them over to new gmail account(s).
I've always used Outlook to service the Pop boxes - and have rules & automation for it all.
So the domain stays merely to enable the email addresses.

(Yes I do have some gmail accounts - but for very specific tasks.)

So you have a domain name, and the emails are redirected to an Outlook/Hotmail account?

If not, can you explain the setup a bit more? I suspect there's a simple, free way of doing it, but I need to know more.

Mauricio - Good point about the email backup.
I spent 20+ years singing that song to clients ;-)

I backup to (1) nightly: a NAS, (2) weekly: a completely offline disk box.
And (3) less frequently to a friend's NAS in Queensland... Reciprocal private clouds.

Biggest danger is now dementia/Alzheimers.

OK sorry - it's so old-school that it's no longer obvious.
Just think what you'd have done 20 years ago - and you're there ;-)

The mail flows into about 5 Pop boxes, set up on a domain hosted at MyHost.

On demand, my Desktop Outlook program downloads them all and sorts them for me.

Mail gets sent from my desktop Outlook - via the SMTP server at MyHost.

No mobile use or need.

No experience with any of these providers but I was looking into this the other day (and pondering the seemingly backward idea of setting up a NZ/AUS based mail hosting service using the Stalwart stack)

https://accounts.mxroute.com/index.php?/cart/black-friday-2023/

$30 USD every 3 years

Porkbun $24 USD / year

So it's Outlook the application, doing POP into those mailboxes. Not webservice Outlook/Hotmail. Ok, thanks.

Well, perhaps POP _from_ those mailboxes - but you are correct: no webservice or Hotmail or cloud Outlook.

Even a simple catch of all mail for the domain (ie: anything@xxxx.co.nz) into one box would work. My local Outlook rules can sort it out from there. I used to have domain addresses which went to other humans - but now they all come to me, so having multiple boxes merely increases the capacity a bit... One box would fill up & overflow faster - if I don't check email over a weekend.

I was going to recommend this option. I've not used it myself, by I really like what Scott (the Purelymail creator) has built.
