Hi all, does anybody know if there is any agreed upon specification of what can and can not be put in reference, code and particulars fields on banking transactions in NZ - and what character length limits there are?

the length is up to your bank, Westpac I think 7 but mostly you'd put invoice number as reference to a payment, particulars are the name of the person paying. Not sure of code.

For ASB it's 12 characters per field, no spaces, alphanumeric (ie A-Za-z0-9) only:

Westpac is definately 12, as are all the other banks. They all need to be the same to go through interchange processing each night. You can put any letter or number in the fields, but there are some restrictions around using characters
