I have been asked by a guy I met through work if I can design a website for him and a business partner. The website looks pretty involved and I havent really done website design before, but I will probably just throw it together using drupal and see how it turns out. My question is, how much should I be charging to this on a per hour basis? Keeping in mind that I am not very experienced at it, but at the same time all development e.t.c. will be done using my own equipment/software/internet e.t.c.

$30-50 per hour I would reckon. Professionals usually charge upwards of $90-120 an hour (eg. Hairy Lemon Web Design in CHCH who do excellent work), freelancers around $50-$90. I personally would come up with a fixed price charge, say around $400 - $600 depending on what is required and make sure you offer regular updates and samples to your client as well as good after sales support. As your new to web design I doubt you could/should/would charge anymore than $50 per hour. Most amateur/freelance designers I know charge around $30 to $40 dollars per hour.

If the design is based on Drupal than you may be able to customize a GNU/GPL theme already available and save a lot of time.

/ Opinion: Based on ten years worth of web design work (both as a designer and a buyer). I usually paid in US dollars though.

Good luck!

Awesome, thanks a lot. I was actually going to quote around $20 due to my lack of experience but I think I might start on $40 and go down to $30 now. I am finding out the specs later this week, and hopefully will be able to give them a set quote based on how many hours I believe it will take and then tell them that if it takes a lot longer there may be extra cost involved.

Thansk again for the advice!!
