Hi there,
any recommendations for Windows-based backup software? We *were* using EMC Retrospect however it does not support our new IBM TS2900 Tape Loader...not good.
Looking to target about 15 Win servers plus a few Windows and Mac desktops.

Hi,

Veritas is a good product - has agents for Exchange, SQL Server etc. Haven't used it for a couple of years now though.

EDIT - Product name is actually Backup Exec

Things are only as complicated as you want them to be!!

Commvault , has agents for pretty much about anything you'd ever want to backup, and will support your loader

Symantec's Backup exec is nice & easy to use - But, for speed & control, I do prefer HP's Openview Data Protector (Note - Not Data Protector EXPRESS - rebranded tapeware aka rubish), steep learning curve tho :)
Don’t quote me on this tho, but w/backupexec you are charged on the amount of devices you cover (‘agents’), OVDP you base your licences around concurrent backup tasks, so once you scale up in numbers OVDP is cheaper, but, Backup exec works out cheaper to start with I believe.

I used CA BrightStor for many years as well. Seems to work well, currently used hooked to a Dell PowerVault tape unit. But have used on single drives as well.

I used Symantec Backup Exec for a few years and found it to be very good, easy to set up and manage, etc.

I have experience with both CA ARCServe and Symantec (Veritas) BackupExec.
BackupExec wins every time on functionality and ease of use.

That HP Openview Data Protector sounds like a good solution based on $$ as 15 machines will be costly under BackupExec. However I haven't used it myself.

Note, BackupExec can be downloaded and installed as a 60-day trial for free, which may provide you with an immediate stop-gap while you source funding and engage a vedor for pricing.

Commvault also comes highly recommended, although the features that used to make them stand out are now included in other products, so they have lost that competitive edge. Still a good product though, although not sure how well they are supported as they have a much smaller user base in NZ.

Sorry forgot to mention - Support for HP OV DP is a pain - You are 'required' to purchase support carepacks for it now (thanks ingram!) regardless of if you need it and/or want it.. This may have changed since the last time I looked at costing...

thanks. Poor past experiences with any of the HP OV suite will steer me away from that one!
Have downloaded Backup Exec trial so will see how that pans out.

I've used Backup Exec for 16 years and apart from the odd hick-up (all in the distant past) it has performed very, very well. I do worry now that it is owned by Symantec, but they seem to be treating it well (ie keeping it updated and not neglecting or breaking it).

One of the reps mentioned that data dedup is on the near horizon for Backup Exec..
