Hi, I am looking for somewhere to transfer a .co.nz domain name to that will allow me to set private name server details.

Currently most my domains are with domains4less.co.nz who have been great but they don't 'glue' the name server IP so I cannot set the private name server details.

Is there anyone in NZ who will let me do this without using their hosting? Or am I best to transfer that one domain to someone like GoDaddy?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated as this is my first venture trialing providing hosting for my clients myself.

Cheers, Amie

Hmmm. What do you mean? You want to register the domain with one company but set the NS to be hosted by another?

I have a domain for my business - www.bluebubble.co.nz - which is now associated with a reseller account I have set up with a US based company. This account comes with my own private name servers so that I can host my clients sites using ns1.bluebubble.co.nz etc for a professional look.

I need to be able to register these private name server details with the domain register for bluebubble.co.nz. Domains4less does not offer this as an option so am wondering if anyone else in NZ does. Clear as mud? :-)

Ok. If you are looking for a NZ registrar, iServe does it. You can register the domain (or transfer) then set the NS servers you want to use (the default obviously would be their own).

Thank you! I have transfered to them and looks like they allow what I need.

In general I use GoDaddy for anything but .nz domains... I use iServe here just because I can set a third party NS server - I use DynDNS for NS mostly because of redundancy and speed of updates.

I would have thought this was a standard feature of every registrar, most I have used let you point to your own name servers.

Edit:  This is a screenshot from domain4less control panel website, definately looks like you can point to custom namesevers to me...

You can set the NS to point at the hosting provider but I had a "private" name server applied to my account rather than just using the NS name of the hosting provider.  It was described to me as requiring a "Glue" record and a couple of the NZ registrars said they don't provide the ability to "glue" the ip address.

Anyway, now that I have moved my main account to Iserve it is all working fine.

Yes thats the screen I use for all my other domains, I can now point those using custom NS to the private one assigned by my hosting (ie. ns.[mycompany].co.nz rather than ns.[hostingcompany].com).

Using the custom on domains4less is different to the private - apparently... all still a learning experience for me Smile

The glue record is just the ip address normally.

First you setup your dns entries on the hosting provider dns servers/system.  Make sure you have an NS and A record for ns1.bluebubble.co.nz (and ns2) with A record pointing to the ip address of the hosting provider dns server/system.

Then.. selecting custom name servers and enter ns1.bluebubble.co.nz (and ns2) and filling in the ip address textbox with the correct address to the hosting provider name server (same as the A record you setup).

I'm pretty sure that should work as expected.

Same here, never had any issues with it. Don't know why it wouldn't be working for you.. Undecided
