Hi all!
Wanted to start a constructive discussion about backup solutions for virtualisation setups.
Imagine, if you like, that a company has asked you to come look at their setup and recommend a backup and DR (disaster recovery) solution for them.
As I know there is many different ways of installing a virutalised enviroment, below are two case study setups that I would like your views on how you would setup a backup solution (VMWare ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V). This will help keep the discussion based on backup solutions rather than virtual solutions.
Site Setup A (ESX):
DSL Business broadband (static IP)
1 x ESX host (Internal SAS Storage - RAID 5)
2 x Guests (1 File, Mail, Print Server and 1 Terminal Server)
1 x Management server
Site Setup B (Microsoft Hyper-V Core):
DSL Business broadband (static IP)
1 x Hyper-V Core Host (Internal SAS Storage - RAID 5)
2 x Guests (1 File, Mail, Print Server and 1 Terminal Server)
1 x Management server
My Backup Solution:
Site A:
Install RAID mirror of 1TB drives into management server - for backup to disk storage
Install tape drive into management server - for duplicating the backup to disk off to tape
Install Symantec Backup Exec for backup of the virtual guests - install agents on both
Purchase two QNAP NAS units and populate them with 2 x 1TB drives in RAID 0+1 Mirror
Purchase Vizioncore's vConverter and setup scheduled backup of virtual guests to the QNAP each night
Site B: (note I do not know much about Hyper-V backups so this is limited by my knowledge)
Install RAID mirror of 1TB drives into management server - for backup to disk storage
Install tape drive into management server - for duplicating the backup to disk off to tape
Install Symantec Backup Exec for backup of the virtual guests - install agents on both
Look forward to hearing your ideas :)
Cheers
Jaymz
