I have a VPS with Where's my server with a single static ip and a domain from domains4less.co.nz (tom.geek.nz) As a newbie I need a simple detailed instructions to get the domain to redirect to the ip of my server 210.4.***.** . I have an apache webserver setup and virtual host configuired. Any help is appreciated. I have another domain setup on the same domain setup on the same server (testsitenz.co.cc) and used an A zone record to set it up but I have no idea on this one.

There are three pieces to the puzzle:

Registrar
DNS Hosting
Website Hosting

You can either use 3 separate companies for each piece, or have one company do two parts or have one company do all.

Does your VPS plan include a DNS service?  Can you install a DNS service/server on your VPS?

You should be able to do what you need to do with the domains4less.co.nz control panel.

See the following entry in their knowledge base:

Ive found its easiest to do DNS hosting with the Registrar, i haven't found any benefit otherwise.

Hey there Tom,
by the looks of your dns information you just need to remove the current a record for the root (eg. no www), and then add one for the correct IP like you have done for the www.

Your domain control panel is the same as mine: www.controlpanel.co.nz

To add to the above, the root record is the one with the '@' symbol in the prefix column.

New a record pointing to @ will sort it out.

And this in your httpd.conf or .htaccess will redirect all non www links to www for a cleaner looking URL.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^tom.geek.nz [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.tom.geek.nz/$1 [R=301,L]
