Trying to troubleshoot a problem with a clients email who has separate web hosting & email hosting for the same domain.
When the website went online on Sunday the email stopped working so I'm thinking it's either needs to propagate or isn't going to work, the email is received in webmail but won't download into Outlook?

Thanks

Hi
If email is recieved in outlook but not webmail it is to do with the outlook settings. Nothing to do with hosting.

The OP says it's the other way around. "the email is received in webmail but won't download into Outlook"

@mushtac: Was Outlook working fine before the website went live?

Whose the host? They would be the best ones to answer that and to see what the issue is. If they are using 2 providers, and you are using a DNS zone file to manage this it could be an misconfiguration in the zone file. Would have nothing to do with propagtion I don't think.

Your outlook is probably looking for the mail server mail.mydomain.co.nz which may or may not have it's name servers pointing to whereever the new website is hosted (which probably doesn't have the email server there).

You will need to find out where the old server is and reset your mx to point to the old address.

Does this make sense? Your email and website hosting can be in two completely different places.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Just sounds like the website host has "taken over" the dns control and has no forwarding records to the mail hosts server(s).

Ask the primary host to confirm that they have the correct MX (mail exchange) records.

If you have no joy I am also happy to help you sort it out. It would only take 10mins to confirm whats going on. getting them to fix could take longer

cheers

The first contact should be your hosting provider.

Having said that, if your client can see emails arriving on webmail but Outlook can not connect to the server to get the emails, and this happened since the domain went live, my guess would be an incorrect DNS configuration.

But, yes please contact your provider first.

I suspect the webmail email is currently being hosted by the same server/network that is hosting the website, and it is a zone file muckup. Thus when they try to connect to the mail host via a pop connection direct to the mailserver, they aren't seeing any email. Some web hosts aren't too good with these things I have found, especially the cheap ones that haven't been around for too long.

Yeap, also the most simple reason is usually the right one.

Yes, Outlook and iPhone email stopped working when the website went live. Thanks for your time.
I will contact the email & webhosting providers to confirm DNS configuration.
