Hi IT Guru's

I wonder if anyone here can help me.  I run a small business where I am producing a large amount of audio files that I need my main client to be able to access on demand.

I have a 1GB hosting plan with Freeparking but it is no longer enough, I really need at least 5GB of storage.  I am sort of forced onto a VPS to get that much storage.  I am an ok newb with ssh, bash, mysql, I can even edit a few conf files.  But I did not get the sysadmin gene and setting up a raw vps including mail and security is beyond me.

Having said that, this is a small part of my business and I'm trying to keep the cost to 40 per month or less, certainly not the 130 and up required for a "managed" VPS account with cpanel etc.

See, all I need is the disk space, not heaps of RAM, bandwidth or databases.  I would really prefer to stay onshore, or Australia.  I would like to keep it all in one, with my domain name, email etc.  I have a custom php app that serves the media, so I need the media to be on my actual web domain, not on a folder on another site.

So I guess what I'm looking for is shared hosting with LOTS of space, or a VPS with some clever cpanel thing, for around 40 a month.  AM I DREAMING ?

many thanks for any input.

If all you need is storage space, why not use something like http://skydrive.live.com/ and create a private folder that you share with your customer?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have a custom php app that serves the files to the client, and among other things, crucially, emails me when they have downloaded a file. I really need that functionality! And the design is all branded with my co. etc. Thanks for the input though.

Ok... You didn't say anything about this "requirement" before, only about serving from your own domain.

An alternative would be using something like Amazon S3 (http://aws.amazon.com/s3/)? You would still need a domain hosting for your scripts, etc but storage itself wouldn't be a problem.

Thanks all for your responses & PM's, really appreciate.

@freitasm

Sorry I thought I had said that in my original post paragraph 4 but I can see it wasn't that explicit. Thanks for your suggestions though.

Depending on the flexibility of your app I might be able to help. If you could possibly look at having the web hosting serve files from a separate FTP server then flick me a PM and we can talk about a solution that should be well within your $40 range.

Depending on your workflow, you could easily offload your media files to Amazon S3 and then serve them direct from S3 or use Amazon's Cloudfront for better performance.

Epilogue.

I ended up with a VPS LITE plan at Net24, who have a sale on at the moment.  It has enough control panel functionality for an ignoramus like me.  Having said that I have done a bit of stuff through bash incl security things, just all the obvious stuff. And for simplicities sake, I subscribed to a separate $5 per month email service through them also, which was good advice on their part.  All up, I am on budget, and very happy with the service.  Everything is running well, and Net24 staff were very quick and helpful with some questions during the changeover.

Big thanks and Net24, and also all the other people here who responded and PM'd me with services etc.
