Hi.

I have an HP ML350 server that I suspect has 2 dead hot swappable power supplies.

I am wondering if anyone would have one or two of these that I could borrow for 5 mins to test my theory?

I can bring the server to you in my lunchtime or something as I wouldn't expect anyone to trust me to take them home.

I am in Christchurch around Avonside area.

The model number of the power supply is: DPS-8700GB Series: HSTNS-PD05

I would only need to borrow them long enough to power the unit on so I can determine if it is the problem or not.

Further to this...

How many power supplies do I actually need to test the system?

As it is a dual CPU setup, do I need to have 2 power supplies plugged in at once (one for each CPU) or is one just for redundancy and I only need one power supply to power both CPU's?

Thanks but I have just been told I only need one PSU to run the server. The other is for redundancy.

What generation of server is it? G4, G4p, G5, G6 or G7? Each has different PSUs.

I have a G4p and G4 here but I am located in Hamilton so a bit far.

Also, HP power supplies have a self test LED on the back of them (only for workstations I have just read) so don't worry about that :P

Its a G5. P/N: 379123-001

I am getting a PPM2 amber light and my search has said it may be the power supplies.

I have been told I only need one and one is for redundancy, so I figure if I can get hold of one I can test it, but does it matter which slot I put it in? Top or bottom?

I have just noticed that on the actual power supplies, there is a green light directly above the plug.

Do these light up when they are connected to power or only when the machine is running?

The ones on mine dont light up at any time that I have noticed. Maybe this is my problem?

Quite possibly,  on my ML350G4p when the PSU is in the server and power is connected the LED light is lit. It is continued to stay lit when the server is powered on.

So I suspect that is my problem then.

Faulty power supplies.

Is that common with this model or brand?

Not that I am aware of, however it is not uncommon for a bad batch of parts to be around.

I take it that the server is out of warranty?

yeah I got it as it was end of lease so I would say it is way out of warranty.

Is there a way of telling how old the unit is? A manufacture code or something on them that I can't find?

Give HP a call and quote the S/N, they should tell you the age of the server.

Interestingly enough, I just found the same PSU here in my box of stuff, however it says "Do not use, not working"

I plugged a power cable into it (while not in a server) and no lights came up on it, nor did any of its fans spin up. Not sure if that helps.

Hey, just a thought though. PM "Divers" here on geekzone and ask them, I know they had some servers that they were testing/looking for parts. Maybe you can parts share or something?

I just gave HP a call and the person in Bombay told me that the server is around 3 1/2 years old and isnt covered by any warranty or contract.

Bugger lol

Heres a question that I have no idea of the answer.

I know this server has 2 x CPU's and they are 1.86GHz, but is there any way of finding out if they are dual core or quad core when you cant boot the system up?

I see by the HP spec sheets for this model that both dual and quad cores were made in 1.86GHz.

I have pulled one of the CPU's out but couldnt see any identifiable markings on it, well none that were identifiable by google anyway.

To save you reading all the posts.
System:
Proliant ML350 G5 approx 3.5 yrs old.
