I've just ordered my first technet subscription from MS.
Towards the end of the order process, I'm told that credit card payment is not available and that I will have to send a cheque...

I should have spat the dummy right then and there, but I begrudgingly persisted. Then, after the order is complete, I'm informed that the cheque has to be sent to Australia!

This is really pathetic. This is a subscription for a digital service (I don't need media sent to me).
I'm not so young that I don't own a cheque book, but writing out a cheque is practically a foreign concept to me in this day and age. Especially when its for a product/service that has no physical properties.

I have to now wait till Monday and ask my bank to give me an international cheque, pay their fee, pay for postage to australia and then sit back and hope like hell that the envelope doesn't float its way back to NZ once it arrives in a flood-ridden country. I can also kiss goodbye to being able to download anything this side of February.

MS, pull your finger out you backward lumbering dinosaur.

/rant

Now to ensure this thread isn't purely a rant, can anyone tell me if there are any retail partners that can sell me the sub (TechNet Standard) and are in Auckland (preferably). I'd much rather that than playing it MS' way.

Help/advice/..abuse all appreciated.

Why was the credit card payment not available? It's all I've ever used for payment.

A very good question. They offered no explaination other than to say its "not currently available".

The conspiracy theorist in me does wonder if they are actively trying to make TechNet less attractive to casual users, especially with the reduction in the number of keys and the completely lack of coupons for months now.

But its probably just a case of them sucking at customer service.

Have you checked that your IP shows up as a New Zealand one?

It is.

I've since spoken to Manila and now have a phone number to call on Monday. Will update then.

What do you mean "casual users"?  Technet subscriptions aren't meant for "casual users" - they're for IT professionals who want to trial full Microsoft products - it's not a replacement for buying retail boxes for home users.  In fact I'm pretty sure using it as a replacement for buying retail boxes for home or production business use is a violation of the terms of the product.

Which is exactly the point I am making. MS doesn't want profiteers selling keys and doesn't want people using the sub as a way to deploy software cheaply for friends and family. There has been a huge number of blogs and forums informing non-professionals that technet is an option. MS has been active in making this a less attractive proposition.

I've tried calling the number the csr gave me yesterday. It doesn't exist. Just rang the general 0800 number and went through the first tier csr but got cutoff when he transferred me....this is going swimmingly....

MS are really going backwards. Yesterday I tried to download volume licensed media for SBS 2011 std and premium, but no, MS are not providing a download citing its too large.

Now I have to pay $40 per DVD, , exploitation at its best.

The name of the package says the one DVD is a DVD5 and the other a DVD9, I'd pull that down in a few minutes from work, no impressed at all.
